DESCRIPTION
Our mission is to provide assistance to address the cause and effect of homelessness and poverty, faced by marginalised individuals. We succeed in achieving this through a combination of caring services like food provision, social welfare and education support.
The Kitchen Hand will be working across Loaves and Fishes Restaurant and Crews Café, ensuring the efficient operation of food services through kitchen cleanliness and support to the culinary team.
THE POSITION
The needs of the disadvantaged in our community is growing and this means our services are needed more and more. To support our food services program we are looking to hire a Kitchen Hand. This will be a Full-Time position on a 12 months Fixed Term contract.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards in the kitchen, including surfaces, equipment, utensils and floors.
- Ensure prompt and thorough washing of dishes, cutlery and cooking equipment.
- Manage waste disposal and empty trash containers regularly.
- Keep food preparation and storage areas sanitised and ensure cleaning supplies are stocked.
- Assist with basic food preparation tasks, including washing, peeling, chopping and measuring and portioning ingredients accurately.
- Assemble and plate dishes according to the chef's instructions.
- Monitor stock rotation and usage, reporting shortages to the Chef, Restaurant Coordinator or Café Coordinator.
- Assist with stocktaking and inventory control as directed.
- Support the culinary team in various kitchen tasks including basic food cooking tasks under supervision.
- Follow proper handwashing and personal hygiene practices.
TO BE CONSIDERED, YOU WILL HAVE:
- Previous experience as a Kitchen Hand or similar role.
- Basic Food Safety Certificate (or willing to obtain)
- Food Safety Supervisor (desirable)
- Sound knowledge of food safety, food handling and hygiene principles.
- Be super reliable and efficient with great time management
- Ability to perform tasks that involve standing, bending and lifting.
- Willingness to learn and take direction from senior kitchen staff.
- Able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
- Empathy for individuals from marginalised backgrounds.
