Meet Margaret...
“As a post WW2 child, I grew up surrounded by strong, resilient, forthright and nurturing women, namely my mother and paternal aunts, who all played a major part in my upbringing. My educators from primary school onwards were all women who instilled in me (although I didn’t realise it at the time) that I could excel at any path I chose in life.
I greatly admire my sister and sister-in-law. They both faced adversity in childhood ,and in recent years, with resilience, grace and determination. I am fortunate to have a daughter and daughter-in-law, both of whom are raising young daughters to have respect for themselves as well as others, an equal voice and empowering them to be the best versions of themselves.
As a woman and a global citizen, I strive to remember my responsibility to ensure equality and inclusion for all my everyday activities within my family and local community and am prepared to speak out against injustice.
International Women’s Day gives us the chance to celebrate the achievements of women globally – both those who paved the way for women’s rights, and all the women today who selflessly contribute to the betterment of our world through the various roles they undertake. It’s a day to remind us there must be a continued call to action for the acceleration of gender parity in all its forms. Collectively, we can all help to create an inclusive world.
We are all part of a community and as such, have a responsibility to support, empower and nurture each other. The love, support and friendships formed as a consequence are a real gift. My husband and I became part of the Rev. Bill Crews Foundation community when we retired almost nine years ago, and it’s a place that represents support, no judgement, a sense of belonging and security. As a volunteer, it continues to give me the opportunity to put into action my belief in the dignity of every person. For me, coming to Ashfield is a happy place and a perfect example of a community in the true sense of the word.”
